Last week my friends Nik and Sandy (newlyweds) asked me to stay a night with Sandy while Nik had to go out of town on business. I said, "No one will get past these guns," kissing each bulging bicep. Okay, i didn't do or say that but I did say sure I'll hang out for a night. So last night after work I hop on the bus that I know goes to somewhere near where they live but haven't taken it before. I get off at the correct stop, and I can see my destination in the distance, across a bridge and construction site. I look around, decide that going around the construction site will tak emuch too long of a time and make my way in. Now, this was fine, because it started out ona road that was closed down but not actually being worked on. Then I see why it had been closed: the bridge had been taken down in order to work on pipes or something.
Shit. do I walk all the way back around? no, it's already late and we're going to dinner. I turn to my left and it looks like I can walk through the actual construction area to my destination. So I start walking, to my left over a big pipe is a straight drop down quite deep where bulldozers are digging even deeper, to my right, the dirt from where they already dug. I had to walk over a few piles of the dirt but no big deal. I see an opening in the fence so I go over to it but behind it is another fence I can't get through. Hmm, now what. So I go back to the path between the pipe and dirt and suddenly there's no more path, only huge piles of dirt. not wanting to slow down I without thinking take a big step up onto this hill of... mud. squish my foot sinks in halfway up my shin. Shit, my first irrational thought is that I stepped in drying concrete and i'm screwed. but no, just mud, so i leverage up with my hand and other foot and quickly skirt across the pile in another 10 steps with minimal squishage. Wearing capris and my hiking sandals made for much less of a mess than could have been.
I finally get out of the site and meet my friend at this mall where we're going to dinner. She's like, "uhhh what do you want to do?" I say "wash my hands and go to dinner while my therapeutic mud bath soaks in!" :) so that's what we did, i got a few odd looks but not many more than usual.
the rest of the night was fine, we hung out for a while, i went to bed early, made sure to check for monsters and burglars before doing so, which got a good laugh from Sandy. And left this morning. no big!
On my way back up my street, I ran into that woman who knocked on my door again. stopped to chat with her a bit. and although she talked to me like i was 3 (a bit too slow and clearly, mostly i don't understand what she says because of vocabulary, but how should she know that), otherwise uneventful. cheers.
